Building An Outdoor Fireplace

Building an outdoor fireplace can be a reasonably easy task or a reasonably difficult task depending on what your goals are. There are many options that should be considered before starting the project.

Option 1

The first option is to build your fireplace attached to your home. This is the most complicated and most costly. Until you finish the project parts of your home will be exposed to the elements outside.

Option 2

While some might want to build a fireplace that is attached to the back of their house maybe even with a chimney, many don't go that route for their backyard fireplaces.

The easier and more effective option is to construct an firepit for your backyard. Firepits are like fireplaces except they are normally circular like a campfire. They can be portable or more permanent with beautiful stone and brick designs.

The first decision that must be made is your fuel source. Most will probably go for the simpler wood burning options while others enjoy propane or natural gas. These options are very similar for indoor fireplaces wood versus gas logs.

If you go with the wood burning option, one suggestion is to use an outdoor see through fireplace. While this could be build up on bricks and stone, the see through screen comes with many designs and can add safety to your fireplace so children or pets won't come in contact with the fire. Just as indoor fireplaces have screens, it's a good idea for outdoor ones as well.

Option 3 - Frame Kits

Regardless what you are going to build for your fireplace, you need to get a frame kits for all non wood burning fireplaces. Frame kits are essentially the core of the fireplace. They come in the shape you want and have essentials like the igniter. These are best for the do-it-yourselfers who want to build their own stone or brick exteriors. You don't have to worry about the mechanics of the fireplace while getting the benefit of building the stone outer shell yourself.
